The Convergence Artists’ Residency
..

About the Residency
The Convergence is Indy Convergence’s signature interdisciplinary residency—a two-week intensive where artists set aside the pressure to produce a finished work and instead focus on process, curiosity, and collaborative exchange. Since 2008, more than 150 artists from diverse disciplines, backgrounds, and regions have joined us to experiment, connect, and expand their practice.
Over two immersive weeks, participants work side by side, testing ideas and following sparks of inspiration wherever they lead. The residency’s interdisciplinary structure turns every collaboration into a chance to see your artform in a new light: dancers build with sculptors, musicians collaborate with theatre-makers, designers find themselves devising movement. The structure is intentionally porous—no artist is siloed in their discipline, and the work here is shaped by the people in the room, with everyone’s practice influencing and intersecting with the rest of the cohort. This is a space where experimentation is encouraged, and failure is part of the process—participants explore, take risks, stumble, and try again, building relationships and expanding their creative practice along the way.
Artists join the Convergence in one of two ways. Some arrive with a project they want to develop. Others participate as contributing artists, moving fluidly between offering support, generating ideas, and exploring their own practice. All residents help shape the umbrella project—a collaborative piece created by the full cohort—as well as the broader creative environment that defines the residency. The program thrives on this blend of individual exploration and collective energy, where every participant contributes, learns, and influences the work happening in the room.
Projects unfold in unpredictable ways. Some develop exactly as planned; others pivot entirely when new ideas or methods emerge. The work evolves through constant exchange: one moment you’re deepening your own practice, the next you’re contributing to someone else’s work, leading a workshop in your area of expertise, or discovering techniques in a discipline you’ve never touched before. This fluid movement between creator, collaborator, teacher, and learner drives the rhythm of the residency and leads to the most surprising discoveries.
This is a full-time, fully engaged experience. Each day blends movement practice, artist-led workshops, dedicated rehearsal time, and conversations that continue beyond the studio. The pace is rigorous by design, and residents often describe the experience as catalytic: a rare opportunity to focus, experiment, and learn from peers whose perspectives broaden your own. Artists leave the residency with a clearer sense of their artistic trajectory, expanded tools drawn from unfamiliar disciplines, and a network of collaborators who challenge, inspire, and support their work. Many projects—and collaborations—extend beyond the residency itself.
The Convergence is where disciplines collide, blend, and reconfigure, generating work that could not have existed elsewhere. It’s where artists find new creative partners and uncover approaches that reshape their long-term practice. If you’re seeking a residency that elevates interdisciplinary practice as an approach to genuine artistic transformation, stay connected to be the first to know when applications open. “It is rare that an artist is given unlimited freedom to fulfill their vision while being presented with a vast array of skill sets to challenge presumptions and with loving encouragement to discover new ideas.”

Components of the Convergence
- Side Projects: Select artists are chosen to lead a project—anything from a fully formed piece to an early question—and receive dedicated time (8hrs of rehearsal), structured support (a curated ensemble to bring your vision to life), and resources (a modest materials budget, determined case by case).
- Umbrella Project: Directed by a residency alum who has a clear vision for integrating the talents of each artist, the full cohort joins forces to develop a collaborative piece over 20 hours of rehearsal.
- Workshop: Each artist leads an entry-level workshop in their area of expertise, and participates in workshops led by other cohort members. These immersive sessions are central to the residency, providing opportunities to exchange skills, experiment with new techniques, and bring fresh ideas into your practice.
- Daily Practice: Every day begins with an all-levels movement class and check-in, setting the tone for collaboration and exploration.
- Open Lab Performance: On the final day, artists share a portion (tbd) of their in-progress work with an audience in an informal showcase. Basic technical elements are included, but the focus isn’t on a polished presentation—this is a chance to experience the urgency and emotional energy that comes from presenting work live, offering new perspective and insight into your creative process.
How We Support Your Work
